The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), the newest of BNL's big machines, is currently under construction with commissioning scheduled for 1999. RHIC will collide subatomic particles called heavy ions at high energies to recreate the hot, dense plasma of quarks and gluons believed to have existed in the early universe immediately after the Big Bang. The Accelerator Systems site presents information about accelerator physics, the Collider Ring Division, the Detector Group, the installation status and instrumentation.
